Weltrend Announced Availability of Multiple USB PD Charger Total Solution Reference Designs
Hsinchu, Taiwan, Weltrend Semiconductor (TWSE: 2436) today announced the availability of multiple USB Power Delivery (PD) charger reference designs including a 20W, 27W, 45W, and 60W USB Type-C AC-DC power adapters suitable for fast charging smart mobile devices such as a smartphone, tablet, notebook PC, handheld game console, and more.
The designs feature Weltrend’s USB PD total solution that include a PWM controller, a synchronize rectification controller, and a USB PD controller that are specifically designed and optimized for USB PD compliant power converters to achieve high power density and efficiency at a competitive BOM cost, enabling designers to shorten the design turnaround time plus a one-stop shopping advantage.
Taking the 20W as an example, a product in high demand as it is optimal for charging Apple’s latest iPhones, it features Weltrend’s WT7181RM high-performance multi-mode (CCM/QR) flyback PWM controller, the WT7131 high-performance synchronous rectification controller, and the WT6636F USB PD controller that supports the latest USB PD standards.
The 20W design supports USB PD 3.0 with Programmable Power Supply (PPS) and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ with power profiles of 5V/3A, 9V/2.22A, 12V/1.66A and PPS of 3.3V~5.9V/3A and 3.3V~11V/2A. It meets high performance efficiency and the demo board comes in a small form factor of just 35 mm x 32 mm x 22 mm, which is about 25 cc. Moreover, the board has passed all relevant safety tests such as EMC, ESD, and surge.

While the 27W design also features the WT7181RM flyback PWM controller, the 45W and 60W designs use the WT7160 high performance multi-mode (CCM/QR) flyback PWM controller.
The WT7160 is specifically designed for USB PD or Qualcomm Quick Charge chargers with wide output voltage range. Its industry leading and patented technology allows it to operate in continuous Current Mode (CCM) during heavy load and operate in discontinuous conduction mode with valley switching during light load.
The following table summarizes Weltrend’s parts used in each reference designs:
The USB PD controllers used in each design can easily be replaced by designer’s choice of other Weltrend’s USB PD controllers such as the WT6633P, WT6671P, and more in consideration of specifications such as fast charge protocols needed, memory re-programmability requirement, and etc.
